Things you should consider.
The first thing to consider do I want colour or are mono prints going to do the job, then how many prints will I be expecting to do. Do I just want to print, or will I need to scan and copy as well?
With these points in mind you can start looking for a machine, next and very important consideration is cost and speed. First let’s look at cost, the first cost is the purchase price this is usually the smaller of the two costs. Rule of thumb the faster  the unit the more expensive and heaver duty. This is due to the manufactures presuming with high speed goes high volume.
The second and often the larger cost is the ongoing running costs, again rule of thumb is the cheaper the unit the higher the running costs, as the manufacturer is selling a unit with low margin. They will make it up later in the running costs. This is not just the ink or toner but in the case of laser units there are drums, developers, fuser units, transfer belts extra. Each manufacture uses different names for these parts and some are sold as consumables and some as spare parts, however they are described they make up the running costs for the life of your machine. Total ownership or life cost.
This is where a trusted person with experience in this type of equipment (not a friend or your IT person opinion) can save you more than the original purchase cost of the machine. This expert will be able to work out from your usage what the breakeven points will be. Advising when to move from a basic machine into a more cost-efficient machine for the life expected from the unit.
